NCSE's 8th National Conference on Climate Change: Science and Solutions

Climate Solutions Consensus Book

International Conference on Climate
Change Curricula in Higher Education
Held from 7-9 June 2010, Tbilisi, Georgia
Flags

Overview
The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF), in cooperation with the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) and its Council of Environmental Deans and Directors (CEDD), and the Climate Literacy & Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN), is holding a conference on Climate Change Curricula in Higher Education over 3 days in June 2010 in Tbilisi, Georgia. The conference will bring together faculty and students to exchange international perspectives in climate change curricula in higher education. The conference will provide multiple opportunities for participants to discuss their work, including oral and poster presentations, panel discussions, and field excursions to areas of climate change impact.

The location of the conference in Tbilisi places it at the intersection of the Irano-Anatolian and Caucasus biodiversity hotspots—a unique setting for educators to explore opportunities and methods for innovative student field work, compare and exchange university curricula in climate change, and strengthen faculty and student career paths though building international ties.

Planned Outcomes

• Establishment of new international collaborations in climate change education
• International comparison and exchange of curricula and pedagogical approaches on climate change, including national standards and guidelines and approaches to climate change education to geography and habitat
• Development of new curricular materials based on discussions and field observations

Conference Planning and Organization

CRDF, led by Dr. Charles Dunlap, will plan and coordinate the conference in close consultation with Dr. David Blockstein of NCSE/CEDD, Mr. Mark McCaffrey of CLEAN, and their colleagues in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. The U.S. National Science Foundation has provided funding for the Conference, with additional cost-sharing support from the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of Georgia.
