Public Policy Committee

New! Announcement from the National Recreation and Park Association:

Outdoor Resources Review Group Convened by Sens. Alexander, Bingaman

A new national advisory group has been convened by Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) to examine the needs for outdoor recreation and conservation in America and present their findings and make recommendations to the new Congress and president next year. (View the article.)

Nat Frazer writes: " There is definitely a need for this type of project after a 20 year hiatus since the Americans Outdoors Commission findings, especially with America’s changing demographics, recreation resources demand and supply, and trends in outdoor recreation. The findings and recommendations of the group could be very interesting. Stay tuned!"

In Fall of 2006, CEDD formed a Public Policy Committee to create a bridge between academic leaders in environmental programs and the federal government. This committee will educate CEDD representatives on key science policy issues and train CEDD members how to effectively communicate with Congress.

Actions Since Fall 2006

  • Since the fall of 2006, the Committee has constituted its membership with the following CEDD members: Bill Sullivan, co-chair, Astrid Merget, co-chair, DeWitt John, Mary Nichols, Mary Doyle, Richard Smardon, Nat Frazer, Marsha Bollinger, Jack Payne, Craig Schiffries, David Blockstein, and Adrienne Keller
  • The Committee crafted and endorsed a vision with a mission statement along with goals and programs.
  • At the 2007 CEDD Winter Meeting, the Committee hosted a “role play” exercise on how members should (or should not) effectively advance their concerns with an elected official and/or senior staff on Capitol Hill. The Committee also arranged for Joel Widder, of Lewis Burke Associates, to provide valuable insight and answer CEDD representatives' questions on communicating with Congress at the meeting.
  • The Committee worked with the CEDD senior staff to organize the University-Federal Dialogue on Environmental and Energy Research and Education, March 26, 2007.
  • At the 2008 CEDD Summer Meeting, Bill Sullivan hosted a panel to discuss opportunities and strategies for environmental leaders, especially in light of the upcoming change in administration.
